What are Dentures?

Dental Dentures at Clark Family Dental in Redmond, OR
Dentures offer patients with missing teeth a removable solution to replacing surrounding gum tissue and the teeth. There are two basic options available to patients looking for a dental replacement solution: partial dentures and complete dentures. The difference between the two lies solely in how many teeth are being “replaced.” Partial dentures are used when a patient has only some teeth missing and complete dentures when all of the natural teeth are missing.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are a removable dental replacement option for those who have natural teeth remaining. The appliance itself consists of replacement teeth that are set into a false pink gum that is usually held in place with help from existing teeth. Metal framework involving wires and/or clasps will anchor the partial denture in place for stability.

A partial denture is useful in that it improves the appearance of a patient’s smile, but more importantly, it prevents existing teeth from shifting or misaligning. Partial dentures are used to replace a row of consecutive teeth, either on the top or bottom of the mouth. They offer stability to the patient that a complete denture cannot provide.

The most important factors in determining if you are a suitable patient for a partial denture is a healthy set of gums and appropriately shaped anchor teeth. There are many other factors that Dr. Clark will assess during your evaluation for a partial denture to determine if you are a good candidate.

Partial Dentures VS Dental Implants

Partial dentures are notorious for showy, exposed, visible clasps. However, there are options that alleviate such unsightly appliance accessories. One of these available alternatives for those patients who are missing some, but not all of their teeth include dental implants. Dental implants can be used in concurrence with cemented bridges to offer patients a more natural looking and feeling tooth replacement option.

Not everyone is a candidate for dental implants and this replacement option is more costly than partial dentures.

Complete Dentures

A complete denture consists of white plastic teeth set in a pink plastic gum base that is designed to sit atop the natural gum. Once all of the teeth in the gum ridge have been removed or lost, a denture can be custom made as a tooth replacement option.

For those considering complete dentures as a tooth replacement option should bear in mind that the use of either top or bottom, and especially both, will require a decent lifestyle change. Complete dentures are known to affect the way that one speaks and eats. Speaking and enunciating words with use of your new complete denture will require some getting used to and practice to master the art of. Additionally, diet changes will need to be made to accommodate your new set of teeth. A full set of removable dentures can affect your self-confidence and overall self-esteem in certain social situations.

Implant retained dentures offer a suitable option for those who have lost all of their teeth. This solution is one that is more natural looking, feeling, and that provides for a full-functioning set of teeth. At Clark Family Dentistry, we recommend this option, particularly for lower bridge replacement as the support of a dental implant offers immense comfortability and functionality.

Complete dentures are useful in helping patients who have lost all of their teeth in the same bridge (or both) restore functionality for eating, speaking and aesthetic purposes.
